FTSE100 Brand Index, Google and Wikipedia
Posted Sunday, July 8, 2007 at 10:31pm in Blogging, Business, Media, PR General, Technology |
What did Wired magazine once say? Google is a reputation management system. Well, if that’s the case, Wikipedia is the actual reputation itself. I’ve mentioned before about Google giving high priority to Wikipedia entries so, with this in mind, decided to conduct a little research into how many Wikipedia entries for the FTSE100 appeared on the first page of Google.co.uk and Google.com using their names as keyword searches.
The results are quite surprising. Or maybe not. A (tabloid cliche) staggering 77 brands from the FTSE100 appeared on the first page of results of Google.co.uk. Google.com had even more at 88. I should have taken note but many of these were placed at number three in the rankings - so we’re not just talking about the bottom end of the page here.
Note: Anyone can contribute to Wikipedia. It’s not a hard task to sign up and start editing straight away. Companies should (and often do) make it their business to check their entry on a daily basis.
I’d love to know how much traffic these entries receive on a daily basis. And am left wondering why more are featured in Google.com as opposed to Google.co.uk?
So here they are. Dodgy pie charts and everything:

Fortune 100 Brand Index, Google and Wikipedia | PRBLOGGER.COM - PR blog

[...] Second instalment of the Wikipedia/Google love. This time it’s using the Fortune 100 taken from the Fortune 1000 list on, ahem, Wikipedia. Again, comparing both Google.co.uk and Google.com I searched the top one hundred’s brand names in the massively popular search engine and, as I suspected, this list included more Wikipedia entries of well-known brands on the first page of results than yesterday’s analysis.
