Perso-professional PR bloggers

I was reading Phil Gomes’ post from last week on how he says more PR bloggers should use their blogs for more “none-industry-related self-expression” and I am inclined to agree.
Why shouldn’t you show some personality on your blog? Why shouldn’t you write about things that interest you outside the PR profession? After all, it is YOUR blog. Can you imagine if you only ever talked to your colleagues about work-related issues? The Christmas party would be terrible!
I like to see personality and individuality on a blog. It gives me an idea of what type of person he/she is and what interests them.
And if it’s something that interests me then cool. If not I won’t read it.
Maybe it’s just the nosey inquisitive person in me.

As long as it relates back to your core content then it’s fine by me. You’re a football fan and using the Bobby Robson example in your post on speeches was great. However if you started posting a lot about Sunderland then it would annoy me. I don’t subscribe to your website to get soccer scores, I can go to Sky Sports for that.
You should use your personality to differentiate yourself, but if your personality is the becoming the draw to your blog then maybe you should change its focus.

A very valid point. But surely you could put up with the odd post from me about something none-PR related? I know I can, and in fact, a majority of the time I enjoy reading PR blogger’s non-industry related posts.
Josh Hallett was consistently posting on his blog about Hurricane Wilma. Although he is a blog consultant and that is the basis of what his blog is about, the hurricane is something that was affecting him in a big way.
I don’t think any PR bloggers would go off the scale all together and totally lose track of their blog’s subject.
