Hat tip to Strategic Public Relations.
Steve Jobs’ introduction of the new Rokr and Nano led to the man himself giving some very interesting facts, particularly on podcasting:
*There are 10 million iTunes customers (which also means 10 million credit cards.)
*The average iTunes customer purchases 60 songs.
*Podcasting technology has been around for one year.
*After offering podcasts on iTunes for two months, it has 7 million podcast subscriptions.
*iTunes offers 15,000 podcasts and adds 1,000 new podcasts each week.
*30% of cars will offer iPod connectivity in the US in 2006.

Vlogging for Politics

The BBC has a good story on a Norwegian vlogger who’s using the tool to actively promote Norway’s Liberal Party. Raymond Kristiansen takes his video camera to all of the party’s conferences, videos, interviews and then posts the visual on his blog.
“At a recent campaign event ahead of the elections, the leader of the Liberal Party did a photo-op with a local businessman in Bergen. While the mainstream media gathered around to record sound bites, Kristiansen stood in the background, taping the entire event with his small camcorder. I’m from the party, and yet I’m looking at the party. Kristiansen says of his strange middle role. I see myself as a mix of sort-of archivist, someone trying to capture things immediately. I am inside, and I am promoting the party, and if I do decide to put some of this online, it will be to show how the media use our party.”
I think this is an ingenious idea. Not only is he showing transparency in the party, he’s also promoting it to the younger members of the country.
He goes on to say:
We don’t need the mainstream media to tell us what’s interesting anymore. Millions of people want to tell their stories, and with video-blogging, they can tell their stories.
How true. If 2005 is the year of podcasting, is 2006 going to be the year of vlogging? People will still debate which has the most purpose, but I think either can be effective, depending on the situation and motives to communicate.
For example, take a look at this short movie shot by people against the war in Iraq.

Online Press Release Update
Posted at 8:34pm in Blogging, Media, PR General | Leave a Comment
You may remember last month I made a post about submitting press releases online? Well since then I’ve been testing a few of the sites I mentioned, and they’ve proved pretty successful. I’m not claiming they do the same job as a normal press release but they definitely have a purpose.
The client who I was writing the releases for is an Internet based business who generate a high percentage of their sales from their website. They wanted to drive more traffic to their site for the obvious reasons and also to get more entries into a competition they were running where an iPod was given away each week.
Some of the sites are pretty worthless but there’s one or two diamonds in there, that once you’ve submitted your release, they go straight into Google News. Not bad really. And if you want to pay a little Paypal cash, you can get it straight into Yahoo! News and other news sites. Obviously, they’re approved first to keep the spammers out.
My client said the increase in traffic to their site was quite substantial, and the iPod competition went from having 17 entrants in two weeks to an average of 20 per day. And when you do a Google (or any other search engine for that matter) search with related keywords, the release is on the first page.
I don’t know if anyone else who reads this blog uses these tools, but it would be good to hear what other people’s thoughts on them are? They aren’t a useful means for distributing all types of press releases, but as I said earlier, they certainly have a purpose.

FIFPro World XI Player Awards

Taylor Herring, the entertainment, music and media specialists are handling the PR account for the FIFPro World XI Player Awards held at the Wembley Conference and Exhibition Centre on the 19th September, in what should promise to be an excellent football event watched by over 300 million viewers.
The reason why it holds a high prestige is, the 55 man shortlistees were voted for by 38,000 football players from five continents, so the winner really will be the footballers’ footballer.
19 Premiership players are in the running, including, Frank Lampard, John Terry, Joe Cole, Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes and Steven Gerard. My only question is, why wasn’t Alan Shearer in there?
